The current model for guitar music topology is no longer thanks to one guitarist, Dr. Terry Allen of Spokane, WA. “I believe this is the most important discovery in music since Pythagoras told us about the overtones series in a vibrating string and how to construct frets on a guitar.”
What is this discovery? Music is round – a Hilbert Space. Guitar music needs to be vetted. Simply playing the notes as written does not correctly play the music. A second step is necessary to make sure the notes are played on the guitar in the right places.
Harmonic notes are of no use to guitarists if they are not also playable.
A general theory of tuning and keys on guitar is invaluable because it puts guitar on an equal footing with musical instruments that have accurate notation.
His Challenge: Prove he’s wrong. “Our focus is on the low intellectual standard for guitar music publications. The industry standard is to print gibberish with notes that are the right pitch but in the wrong position on the guitar, resulting in music that cannot be played correctly up-to-tempo and cannot easily be used to determine how the music is actually played. The result is a copyright for music that the copyright owners have no idea how to play and cannot correctly transcribe. (This includes examples like Jimi Hendrix and John Lennon!)”
“The power of the system I have discovered is absolutely extraordinary, far more powerful than rules of harmony, and in the future will guide music publishers, composers, and the guitar army in general.” - Dr. Terry Allen

ABOUT DR. TERRY ALLEN. Terry is a retired forensic pathologist who let music take over his life. A guitar player for 50 years, he reads and writes music. He has carefully and systematical analyzed old blues records. This led to a novel theory about the relation between the musical key observed in a recording and the actual key used to compose music. This solves a serious problem in music publishing when guitarists do not leave holographic transcriptions of their compositions.
Married to Dr. Kim Thorburn, he lives in Spokane, WA. When he’s not strumming a tune or gardening, you can find him mountain biking or hiking in the great outdoors. As a youngster, he learned to surf and used to catch waves in Hawaii during his ten year residence.
He recorded "Big Bury" and "The Drifter" albums with Jim Bury and Flight of Ideas, and is currently producing an album with Jim Bury and the Cipher Band. [These will be on iTunes and YouTube shortly.]
